Review

I assumed the original had to be a novel, so before watching I looked for the book first.
Turns out it wasn't a novel at all — the original is a play by Spanish playwright Juan Mayorga, El chico de la última fila (2006).
Apparently it's been staged in Korea across multiple seasons too, so rather than tracking down the original text, I just binge-watched the show the moment it dropped.
Honestly, as the story unfolded, the ending became fairly predictable.
But that didn't really bother me.
I think it's because the twist in this drama isn't there for the sake of fun — it felt more like a device meant to give weight to the story it was ultimately trying to tell.
This might just be my own overreading, but I loved little details like how everyone keeps calling Heo Mun-oh seonsaengnim (teacher) instead of gyosunim (professor).
The sound design and directing tone were great too.
The sound effects placed exactly where they needed to be, along with the camera work, reminded me of director Park Chan-wook's films, which probably explains why the directing suited my taste so well.
The emotional performances between the characters were excellent too — a dense, layered ensemble that was only possible because veteran actors came together for this.
In the end, I think what this drama is really trying to say is how far the obsession that a story must be special can push a person.
Voyeurism and obsession dressed up as literature, and an open ending where someone reaches out again at the very end to say "let's start a new story" — this was a drama that left me uneasy yet strangely lingering in my mind.
