Review

This work is set in a future era where mankind has overcome death.
The world is perfectly governed by an omnipotent artificial intelligence called Thunderhead created by mankind.
It is the ultimate utopia we have dreamed of.

But in this perfect world, a dark necessary evil exists.
Artificial death becomes necessary to prevent overpopulation, and the beings who execute such deaths are Scythes.

The Scythedom, the only organization outside the rule of the Thunderhead, seems to be the only dystopian element in the utopian world.
However, this is not a failure of utopia, but an inevitable byproduct of its success.

The utopian solution of perfect immortality inevitably caused the dystopian problem of artificial death.

The Scythedom is operated under a strict legal system called the Ten Commandments.
Among them, the commandment Kill without any bias, bigotry, or malice seems to be the most difficult but most important commandment for scythes.

The most fatal flaw of the Tenth Commandment system is the clause Thou shalt be bound by no law other than these.
This clause was intended to ensure the independence of the reapers for the sacred mission of harvesting, but in reality, it completely separates them from all laws and surveillance of the Thunderhead and human society, creating a potential lawless zone.

I should read the next series Thunderhead right away.
