The biggest feature of this work is that it boldly discards the question who is the culprit and doggedly digs into the question of why did they commit the crime.
The culprit is revealed early in the novel, and the readers' finding the culprit is intentionally removed to force the reader's gaze to a more complex and fundamental mystery: tracking the motive.

It unfolds in a unique format of presenting the records of two characters interchangeably rather than an omniscient author's perspective.
The intersection of the culprit's hand-written account and Detective Kaga's investigation record is a core theme of the novel, exploring the truth and fiction inherent in the act of recording itself.
The reader must discern the greater truth hidden behind the recorded truth through two conflicting texts.
Malice means pure hatred that seeks only to negate and destroy the opponent's existence itself without any specific occasion or reason.
